GDACS: the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System

GDACS (Global Disaster and Alert Coordination System) is a cooperation under the United Nations umbrella in cooperation with the European Commission. It has been installed with the intention to provide disaster alerts and initial information about potential or actual disasters. The web site can be found here.

Ir provides updated information about natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, storms etc. The services provided by GDACS are

  • alerts and impact estimations after major disasters through a multi-hazard disaster impact assessment,
  • standards and guidelines for international information exchange in disasters,
  • real-time coordination platform VirtualOSOCC to disaster relief staff worldwide,
  • coordinates the production and distribution of disaster maps and satellite imagery.
